The Australian Rally Museum has organised with Subaru Australia to have Possum Bourne’s ARC winning Group N car from 2002 displayed at Novotel Opal Cove, head quarters for Rally Australia, leading up to and throughout the event.
After dominating the ARC for six years from 1996 – 2001 first in a Group a and then a WRC Subaru Possum struggled to come to grips with the lower powered Group N car during the first round of the 2002 ARC in NSW , ultimately failing to finish both heats after a series of flat tyres. He and Mark bounced back to achieve a win and a second in the two heats of the second round in Western Australia, then had a disappointing DNF in the Rally of Canberra, a round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship. From there however they dominated, winning five out of the eight heats in the remaining rounds of the championship. They capped the year off by winning the Group N class at the Rally of New Zealand.
Perhaps this year has been summed up best on the Subaru New Zealand website.
“Possum enjoyed challenges and after a decade of top performances in a succession of highly modified Group A and World Rally Cars, he relished winning the Australian championship in a standard production Impreza STI in 2002.”
The Australian Rally Museum Incorporated thanks Subaru Australia and Novotel Opal Cove for their generosity in making this display possible.
